Etymology

v. lam , 'loam,' ersc , 'stubble field.' The soil varies from “a rich sandy loam, excellent for turnips, to a strong soil on which hops have been grown” (White 704). Cf. Lammas (Nf)Lamers DB, Lammesse c. 1150 Bodl, Lammersch 1282 FF.
