Etymology

The Sump (6″) is le Sompe 1450MinAcct . This is a ME  cognate of LG sump , 'marsh, swamp, morass.' Cf. Brunes sumpe (in Dedham) 1241 FF and le Sompte (in Writtle) 1549 Pat. The first example of sump in NED is dated 1425.
