Etymology

'Passa 's open country,' v. feld and Pasfield infra 636. The change of second element from -field to -low is due to the prominence in Essex in the 13th century of the family of Passelewe . Cf. Parsloes infra 92. Hamo Passeleuue had land in Stondon a. 1252 (Cl), and John Passelewe in Chipping Ongar in 1375 (FF ).
