Etymology

'Hægel 's clearing,' v. leah . For this name cf. Hailsham (PN Sx 435) and Hellesdon (Nf), DBHailesduna . There were two other places in the neighbourhood named after the same man: Halesdunam 1086 DB, Hailisduna a. 1272 Colch, Haylesdon 1318FF , Halesdene 1323For , Aylsdon 1368FF ('Hægel 's hill,' v. dun), and Haylesput 1285Ass ('Hægel 's hollow, pit,' v. pytt ).For -light cf. Leigh supra 188–9. The forms in -lef are curious.They possibly have their parallel in Aycliffe (PN NbDu 8), which may go back to earlier acleah .
