Etymology

Probably 'Æga 's stone,' with early confusion between tun and stan . For this pers. name cf. s. n. Eydon (PN Nth 35).The plural form probably arises from the two settlements.Great Easton was formerly called atte Munte , at Hill and Doune because the church is on a hill overlooking the Chelmer, whilst Little was ad Turrim or a la Tour , 'at the steeple,' because the church had a tower.
