Etymology

'Cana 's open country,' v. feld and cf. Canewdon supra 179.The DB Caned - is perhaps a bad form for Caneg - (cf. DB Ledecestre for Leicester, Scelda for Scelga (Shellow), Sydriches Hey for Sigerices - (s. n. Northey supra 218), Redleg for Rayleigh supra 194, and IPN 111 n. 2), and this, with the 1323 form Canewe -, points to the possibility that this was an inga -name.-ville is a French substitution for -vel from veld , due to the Essex voicing of f . This v also > w , hence -well . Cf. IPN 94.Great Canfield was called ad Castrum from the castle of the de Veres who held the manor in 1086, Comitis Roberti from Robert de Ver, who later became earl of Oxford, Comitisse from the countess . It is south of Little Canfield, but stretches farther west . Little Canfield was called Childes (v. cild ) and Blancmustr ' from the family of Thomas de Albo Monasterio (1275 FF).Cf. Blamster's supra 433, infra 485–6. Childene from gen. pl. cildra with dissimilation of r to n . Cf. IPN 106, Child Hanley (St) and Childs Wickham (Gl).
