Rutlands (Bridge)

Early-attested site in the Parish of Felsted

Historical Forms

  • Lackfords Croft 1576 French
  • Rodelondes 1415 Inqaqd

Etymology

Rutlands (Bridge) is Lackfords Croft 1576French . It is impossible to say whether Lackfords here is manorial, from some family coming from Lackford (Sf) or if Lackford was the name of the ford which preceded the bridge. Rutlands probably goes back to Rodelondes (1415 Inq aqd), formerly held by Thomas Helpeston whose surname survives in Whelpstone's Fm infra 424 on the opposite side of the Ter. v. rod , land .
