Etymology

Ekwall (PN in -ing 44) is probably correct in taking this name as going back to OE  Fēringas from the stem found in fōr , 'journey,' ge -fēra , 'companion.' There may well have been an OE  pers. name Fēra . Cf. Ferring (PN Sx 167–8).
