Etymology

'Wicga 's hollow,' v. pytt and cf. Wigborough supra 323.Alternatively the second element is sometimes foss (e ), 'trench, ditch,' hitherto not recorded before c. 1440 (NED). The place lies in a well-marked valley. The original name has been ousted by that of the family of Humphrey de Rokell , Rochella , Rupella , Larochele which held the manor from 1205 (FF) to 1376 (AD vi).
