Etymology

'Thorn-hill,' v. þorn , dun . The modern pronunciation is due to AN t for th ; Est-thorndon became Est-torndon and then Est-orndon , the inorganic h being due to the influence of the neighbouring Horndon-on-the-Hill. The normal form survives in Thorndon Hall and Park in West Horndon. West Horndon was formerly called Little , while East was called Great and Abbatis because the manor belonged to the Abbot of Waltham. For the early forms cf. Thornton (PN Bk 64).
