Etymology

This is 'Dunn (a )'s land,' with connective ing. It has been suggested (Karlström 116, KPN 254–5) that this may be really dūninglond , a derivative of dun , 'hill,' but this is very unlikely in view of the early date and excellent quality of the document from which the earliest forms come. This may be said without prejudice to the interpretation of Duningcland in Kent (BCS 254, an original 8th-century charter with later endorsement …unningland ) and unidentified Duningland (BCS 499, 13th- century copy) in Wiltshire. West Donyland is now Berechurch supra 372.
