Plunker's Green

Early-attested site in the Parish of Doddinghurst

Historical Forms

  • Plumtunā 1086 DB
  • Plimptonhope 1286 M

Etymology

Plunker's Green (6″) may be Plumtunā 1086 DB, Plimptonhope 1286 M. 'Plum-tree enclosure,' v. plume , tun . This Domesday manor has not hitherto been identified. It was a small holding of 14 acres of land, 1 1/2 acres of meadow, and wood for 20 swine, entered in DB under Ongar Hundred. In 1219 (FF) there is mention in Doddinghurst of “15 acres of land and pannage for 20 hogs in the wood of William Thorell of (or at) Kelewedon,” i.e. Kelvedon Hatch in Ongar Hundred. This seems to be the same small holding. Morant says that Plimpton Hope was in Stondon Massey. Plunker's Green is less than a mile from the junction of the boundaries of the three parishes of Stondon, Kelvedon Hatch and Doddinghurst. It would seem possible, therefore, that this name is derived from Plumtun . mt > nt through partial assimilation; later there was common confusion of t and k . The s is pseudo-manorial.
