Etymology

Formerly called Little . Matild ' probably from Matilda , wife of Norman de Burgate who held land of Roger de Mores in 1235 (FF). v. Moors Fm infra . The other attributes derive from Viel Engayne (1218) whose surname also survives in Gaynes Park supra 84, 133. “Vulgarly' Gains Colne” (M ii, 217).
