Etymology

'Marshland marked by a burh or fortified place,' v. fenn . The l is due to AN confusion of r and l . v. IPN 106, and cf. Bulverhythe from burhwara -hȳð (PN Sx 535). Its persistence here is clearly due, in part at least, to the fact that bull-fen made good sense.
