Etymology

'Nut-leah.' Cf. Notley (PN Bk 123), Nutley (PN Sx 350, PN D 219), and Nunty's Fm infra 397–8. Black Notley was formerly called Great , and White both Little and Dengayne , the latter because the manor was in the hands of the Engaine family from 1211 to 1399 (M ii, 121). For Notleight cf. Leigh supra 188–9.
