Etymology

This may be from OE  slā (h )-muntes -(ge )hæg , 'enclosure of the sloe(tree)-hill.' Cf. slahhyll KCD 724 and v. sla(h), (ge)hæg. The medial element is OE  munt , influenced by AFr  monde , 'mound.' For the type of name cf. Plumberow Mount supra 187, and for similar triple compounds cf. bradelegesheie , holanbeorges tuun , etc. (Ritter 155–6).
