Etymology

Totgrove Spring (6″) is Totegroue 1277–1391Ct , Totegraue 1312 ib. Tottle Field is Totwells 1641Rental and Tot Lane (6″) is Toteland c. 1200 Ch ; cf. Longlane supra . These names and the lost Totebrok (1277, 1312Ct ) may derive from the same man Tota (v. graf(a), land and broc ), but as there is a prominent hill here, tote , 'look-out hill,' is an equally possible interpretation.
