Etymology

Shearing Place is Schiringa 1181, Steringe 1222 StP, Sheering c. 1840 TA. This name is probably identical with Sheering supra 50. OE  Scīringas , 'settlement of the people of Scīr .' A singular name in -ing is, however, possible—scīring , 'the bright place,' from OE  scir, 'bright.'
