Etymology

The church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary . Hugh, son of Geoffrey , and Aeitrop his heir (Eutropius , Aitrop , son of Hugh) made gifts to Colne Priory of land in this parish (12thColne ).Eitropus filius Hugonis was living in 1205 (Cur). The manor was granted to Alberic de Vere, Earl of Oxford, by Nigel, second bishop of Ely (M ii, 467). v. Roding supra 490.
