Etymology

Rouncefall alias Rouncefields is Runcyvall 1579 ChancP.This was probably part of the possessions here of the Hospital of Our Lady of Rouncevale , Charing Cross (1291 Tax, 1500 ECP), but it is curious that Geoffrey de Runceual (l ) was connected with Ashingdon and Hawkwell in 1254 (Ass ) and Katherine Runcevale with Sutton in 1305 (StJohn ). The Hospital at Charing Cross was a cell of the Priory of St Mary of Roncesvalles in the Pyrenees.
