Etymology

Owing to the paucity of forms, it is impossible to determine what the original name was. For the identification v. VCH i, 392–3. The modern name means 'the home of Æschild ,' v. ham .This woman's name is not on record in OE, but it is a regularly formed compound which has parallels in OGer  Ascoildis , Aschilt (Förstemann, PN 148).
