Etymology

This name and West Heslerton infra 122 contain a first element which would appear to be related to OE  hæsel 'hazel.'It is possible that there was an OE  secondary form hæseler related to MDu  hazelare (by the side of MDu  hazel ) in the same way as OE  *mispel and *mispeler are related (cf. Kirkby Misperton, PN NRY 75 and ME mespile , mespiler ), ME  medle , medlar , etc. This er - suffix is of Latin origin (v. NED s.v.). 'Hazel enclosure,' v. tun .
