Etymology

Wheel Hall is Welhall '1314, 1316 Dunelm, Welehall 1610 Speed, 1695 Morden, (le ) Welhous c. 1348, 1363 Works, (le ) Welhowes 1363 ib., Welehous 1363 ib., Welehows 1525 Test, Welle 1750 Bowen.'Hall or house near the river-deep,' from OE  wǣl (cf. Weel supra 202) and h(e)all, hus . Wheel Hall is at a sharp bend in the course of the Ouse and the modern spelling shows confusion with hweol .
