Etymology

Probably 'at the streams' from OScand  (i ) brunnum , dat. pl. of brunnr. There are many springs and little streams called runnels round about. Ekwall (DEPN s. n .), laying stress on the DB form, suggests an OE  burna-hamm . 'Nun' from the Benedictine Nunnery here.
