Etymology

'Heath land,' v. hæð , feld . The forms have been considerably influenced by the cognate OScand  heiðr 'uncultivated land,' as in Hatfield (WRY), Haethfelth 8th Bede, Hedfeld , Heitfeld 1086 DB, 1276 RH. 'Great' and 'East' to distinguish the name from Little Hatfield infra 67.
