Etymology

OScand í haugum 'on the hills,' dat. plur. of haugr , or OE  hōhum , dat. plur. of hoh 'spur of land, hill,' as in Howe Bridge (PN NRY 44). Cf. Dan  Hygum (1231 Høghum ). v. The Wolds supra 13. The modern spelling arose when ME  holm lost its l by vocalisation, and fell in with houm .
