Etymology

'Kel (l )ing 's village,' v. þorp . Kel (l )ing is possibly a derivative of some OScand  pers. name in Ketil - (Ketilbjǫrn , etc.) or OScand  Ketill itself. It is to be associated with the Swedish place-name Källunge (ON  på -inge 85), OSwed  Kælle (Lundgren-Brate 157), and ME  Kel (ZEN 52). For the early assimilation of tl to ll cf. Knedlington infra 253 and Bridlington supra 100.
