Etymology

There is a pers. name Flot (e )man which is recorded three times in Y DB and as the surname of Thomas Flotman (1342SR , North Cave); it also enters into Newton Flotman (Nf), Newton Floteman 1301 Pat. It is probably a nickname derived from OScand  flótta -maðr 'a fugitive (from justice)' or OScand  flot (i ) 'ship' and maðr 'shipman.' One or other of these words in its original significance is probably found in Flotmanby just as we have hundmaðr in Hunmanby supra 109. The spellings suggest an OScand gen. plur.; hence, 'by of the flotmen .'
