Etymology

Huntow is Huntondale (sic for Huntoudale ) c. 1270 Bridl. 'Huntsman's mound,' from OE  hunta and haugr , or 'Hunta 's mound' from the pers. name Hunta (cf. Huntingdon, PN BedsHu 261, Huntington, PN NRY 12). A lost Huntou 1225 Bridl (in Fraisthorpe supra 87) may be of similar origin. v. Dickering Wapentake supra 84–5. There is also an East Huntow and West Huntow in Bridlington township, named from Huntow in Buckton. There are several tumuli in the neighbourhood.
