Etymology

'Hamlet', OE , ON  þorp + manorial suffix of uncertain origin. The surn. Thewles from ME  theweles 'vicious, immoral' (OE  þēawlēas < þēaw 'usage, custom, habit, conduct, disposition', in pl. 'good manners' + lēas 'without, false, faithless') occurs in Yorkshire from 1327 (Reaney 346) but is not known in connection with this manor.
