Etymology

This is usually explained as a compound of ON , ODan  brunnr 'a spring' and ODan  toft 'a building plot, a curtilage' (NbDu 33, EPNE 2183), “the toft upon the burn or stream” Surtees III 88. The reference would be to the stream variously known as North Burn or Close Beck.High Burn Toft, however, is situated at the top of a steep brow overlooking the stream and the specific might, therefore, be ON  brún 'an edge, the brow of a hill'.

There was a chapel at Bruntoft, not recorded by Hadcock; capelle de Bruntoft c.1270×80Spec , capellam de Bruntoft '1315Ct .
