Etymology

“The compact parish of Elton consisting of a single township, lies ot the west of Stockton; it has Long Newton to the south and west, Redmarshall and Norton to the [n]orth… The area is 1,444 acres… The soil is clay”, VCH III 232. In 1850 the farming was mixed arable and pastoral.
