Etymology

A Celtic name, originally applied to the stream on which Wynford stands, from PrWelsh  *wïnn3 'white, bright' and PrWelsh  *frud 'stream', and identical in origin with Winford So (DEPN) and the first part of Winfrith Newburgh 1174–5, v. Ekwall RN 462–3, Jackson 555–6, CVEP 295. The affix Eagle is manorial: the manor was a member of the Honour or Barony of Aquila or Eagle (centred on Pevensey Sx) for which v. Hutch3 2701, and Gilbert de Aquila is recorded as possessing it in 1204 P and 1227 Ch, cf. also the inscription (probably e12) on a tympanum in Wynford Eagle church: Mahald Del Egele (RCHM 1 269b reads: Mahad Delegele ). The surname is from the castle/town of L'Aigle in Normandy. The alternative affix West recorded in just one 13th-cent. source is no doubt in relation to Winfrith Newburgh.
