Etymology

'The enclosure', v. worð . Robert Fitz -Pain held lands here in 1212 Hutch3, cf. 'Roger son of Pagan' 1236 FF, Robert Fitz Payn 1303 Hutch3, 1360 Cl, etc. John Mautravers was here in 1335 Ch, 1339 Pat, cf. ten ' terr ' nup ' d 'ni Matervers p ' terr ' in Wourthe 1546Ct . The forms Estwurth , -worth probably refer simply to the E part of the manor, v. ēast . For the affix- in Porbik , etc, v. Isle of Purbeck supra . The whole or part of the manor is also apparently referred to as villa de Bitteworth , villa de Bytteworth 1288Ass , Byttewrth 14Weld 2, 'Bitta's enclosure', with the OE  pers.n. Bitta found in Bittadon D 29, Bitworthy D 82, etc. There was a mill at Worth Mat. in 1086 DB (VCHDo 399), cf. also molend ' de Wurth 1244Ass .
