Etymology

Named from R. South Winterborne, v. RNs.infra , cf. Winterborne Came par. supra . It belonged to the Cluniac priory of Le Wast (de Wasto ) near Boulogne from the early 13th cent., v. Hutch3 2530.Moneketon , etc. means 'village of the monks', and Moneken - in the 1331 form is a new ME wk. gen. pl. 'monks'' (cf. -Monachorum ), v. munuc , tūn , -ena . Another form that probably refers to this Winterborne (or some part of it) is Wynterb (o )urn Pygace , Winterb (o )urn Pygace 1280Ass , Winterb (o )urn Pygaz 1329 FF; for the affix, cf. Waye Pigace , etc. for the formerly adjacent Upwey par. supra . On the identification of the DB form, v. Eyton 121–2, VCHDo 3114, 147.
