Etymology

Named from R. South Winterborne, v. RNs.infra . For the possible identification of this place with one of the DB manors called Wintreburne , v. Eyton 121–2, DBGeography 74 ff, cf. VCHDo 3147, Winterborne Came par. supra . The affix Harang , etc. is from the family of this name; Philip Hareng , Harang was here in 1243, 1268 FF, Walter Heryng in 1327SR , 1332 SR, 1336 Pat, cf. Chaldon Herring par. supra ; tūn 'village' is added from 1288. The affix Beuchamp is also manorial, from the chief lords of the manor during the 13th cent., cf. Robert de Bello Campo 1242–3 Fees, v. Hutch3 2521.
