Etymology

'Thorn-bush enclosure, enclosure formed by thorn-bushes', from þyrne (alternating with the cognate þorn ) and worð (replaced once by worðig ). On AN T - for Th -, v. ANInfl 39ff, IPN 98, Feilitzen 100ff; the strong AN  influence on the name of this place may reflect its early possession by the great Norman family of de Lincoln , v. Hutch3 3466.
