Etymology

Named from R. Tarrant, Tarrant H. par. supra , RNs. infra ; on the probable identification of the DB form, v. Eyton 131–2, VCHDo 369. The affixes are manorial: land in Tarente was held by William de Vilers in 1194 Cur and 1199 FF, various estates in Do, Ha and So belonging to Roger de Vilers were granted by the king to Peter de Rusceaus in 1216 ClR, and Roger de Vilers acknowledged the manor of Tarente to be right of Peter de Russeous in 1227 FF, cf. also Peter de Russea (u )ls 1224 ClR, 1238 Ch, Peter de Russell '1226 ib, Peter de Russels 1227 ib, Peter de Ruscheaus 1244Ass . The later forms of Rushton 'the estate of (de ) Rusceaus ', v. tūn , have been influenced by the common p.n. Rushton from risc , rysc 'a rush' and tūn , cf. 1147.
