Etymology

Named from R. Tarrant, v. RNs.infra , cf. Tarrant H. par. supra ; Nuns -, -Monachorum (for Monacharum , 'of the nuns'), -Abbey with reference to the former abbey here, v. St Mary & All Saints' Abbey infra . Little Crawford , originally comprising a large part of the present par., is so named to distinguish it from Great Crawford (q. v .) in Spettisbury par. supra on the opposite bank of R. Stour, v. lȳtel . Preston Crawford is from Preston Fm (earlier Tarrant Preston ) which formerly formed a tithing with (Tarrant) Crawford (Hutch3 3 118, cf. Preston cum Craford Tithing 1664 HTax), and which is now in Tarrant Rush. par. infra .
