Etymology

Magiston Fm (SY 637967) & Magiston Hill, 1839TA , Ma (r )gereston juxta Frompton 1330 Drew, aque de Mageston (in bounds of Sydling St N. par.), Magyston '14 (16) Winch , Mageston 1390 Fine, 1795 Boswell, Mageston Higher , Mageston Little , Mageston Lower , Mageston alias Matchem Higher [&] Lower 1811 OS, Mageston vulgo Matchen or Matson 1863 Hutch3, Magiston Hill Brow , Higher Crooked Magiston & Lower Crooked Magiston (f.ns.)1839TA , Higher and Lower Matchen 1863 Hutch3. 'Ma(u)ger's manor', from the pers.n. or surname Mauger and tūn , cf. Relicta Johannis Mager 1332 SR (taxed in the tithing of Fifehead Sydling supra ). This is thus a post-Conquest name in tūn and apparently identical in origin with Madjeston in Gillingham par. 3 15.Lower Magiston lies S of the par. bdy in Frampton par. q. v. supra , hence the 1330 form.
