Etymology

Probably 'dairy-farm of the herdsmen or peasants', v. swān 2 (gen.pl. swāna ), wīc , but swan 1 (gen.pl. swana ) 'swan' is equally possible for the first el., in which case the name might mean 'swannery' as suggested in DEPN, cf. Swanwick Db 189, Ha (DEPN).The spelling San (d )wich , etc common from 16th cent, has no doubt been influenced by Sandwich Kt (first el. sand 'sand') as well as by popular etymology. There was a lodge of the forest of Purbeck 'on a hillock near Swanwich, where there are ruins of a wind-mill' (Hutch3 1463), cf. Isle of Purbeck supra , Windmill Knap in Langton Mat. par. supra . The rectory here was called 'the rectory of Swanwich , alias Worth Swanwich '1561 Hutch3 1693, cf. Worth Mat. par. infra and note on ecclesiastical history supra .
