Etymology

The origin of Caundle is obscure. Ekwall (RN 72, DEPN) thinks it was probably an old British name for (one of) the chain of hills lying between this place and the other Caundles (v. Bishops Caundle, Caundle Marsh and Purse Caundle all infra in Sherborne Hd), and suggests a possible connection with the obscure British el. *canto- thought to be found in Camel and Quantock So as well as in the county-name Kent.Whatever its origin, the form may well have been associated at an early date with the common OE  sb. candel 'a candle'.All the Caundles except Purse Caundle are on different arms of Caundle Brook, which Ekwall takes to be named from the places.

The affixes are manorial. Robert Malherbe granted 2 ½ hides of land here to Henry de Haddon in 1202 FF, cf. also John Mal (h )erbe 1280 FF, CottCh , Henry de Haddon 1235–6 Fees, 1236, 1280 FF, etc, and v. Haddon Lodge infra . The Lords Stourton possessed the manor from the 15th century until 1727 (Hutch3 3666–7), The Lord Stourton hath a fair maner place 1535–43 Leland.
