Etymology

Rowden Mill Copse, Rowden Mill Fm (ST 712135), Rowden Mill Lane, Rowdonhill '1538, Rowdenhill , Rowden yate 1614Digby , Rowdon Hill 1709WRO , Rawdon Mill [Bridge]1791 Boswell, Rowton Mill Fm 1811 OS, Rowden (s ) Hill 1842TA (Bps. Caundle), cf. Mill Plot 1839TA , 'rough hill', from rūh (wk.obl. rūwan ) and dūn , with hyll , geat . This may have been the site of 'the mill of Candel Joce '1256 FF (v. par. name supra ) and of the lost Bradeford sub molendino de Candel Hy 3 (14) Cerne (in the bounds of Blackmoor Forest, v. brād , ford ), cf. also the fourth part of a mill in Caundel Haddon 1280 FF, Simon atte Mulle 1327SR , 1332 SR ('at the mill', v. atte , myln ), and the mills at the two manors of Candelle in 1086 DB (VCHDo 395).
