Etymology

'Sheep farm', from WSax  scēap (gen.pl. -a ) and wīc, identical in origin with Shapwick So (DEPN) and Shopwyke Sx 76. The spellings in Escape - and Sap (e )-, Sep (e )- show AN influence, v. IPN 103, 113. The affixes Champaigne and Plecy are manorial. The manor of Shapwick Champaigne was named from Henry and Ralph de Champaines who held a knight's fee here in 1212 Fees, cf. Roger de Chaunpayne 1256 FF, Joan(de ) Chaumpaign (e ), Roger (de ) Chaumpaign (e )1332 SR, mes ' voc ' Champeynsplase , mes ' voc ' Champeynsplace 1429–30DLCt (v. place ), and the f.n. Champayne Cl infra , v. Hutch3 3160–1. The manor of Shapwick Plecy was named from John Plecy 1389DLRent , 1407 IpmR, cf. Playseys Wode 1509DLCt (v. wudu ), v. Hutch3 3165–6; this manor was later called Camells (Shapwicke ) (cf. mansionem Roberti Cammell , Cammelles Place 1509DLCt (v. place ), Cammellondes 1548ib (v. land ), the manor of Shapwick called Cammels 1569 Hutch3, mannor farme and scyte of the mannorformerly called Camells 1591DLMB ), from John Cammell 1451 Hutch3, 1472DLCt . A third manor in Shapwick was Vinter 's Fee , v. infra .
