Etymology

For Caundle, v. Stourton Caundle par. supra . The affix is manorial. Although no family of this name has been noted in connection with this place, the name does occur elsewhere in Do (e.g. Henry Purs 1327SR (Corfe Castle), Henry Purs 1327SR , 1332 SR (Puddletown)) as well as widely in other counties (v. Fägersten 213 fn. 1 and Reaney s.n. Purse ).Ekwall's suggestion (DEPN) that Purse may represent OE  prēost (in allusion to the possession of the manor by Athelney Abbey) can hardly be correct.

Other forms that may belong to this manor or part of it are Candell Columbers 1259 FF, Caundel Columbers 1268Ass (cf. Robert de Columbar (iis )Hy 3HarlCh , 1259 FF) and Whetenecandel 1252 FF, Caundell Wethill 1411 Pat ('wheaten, where wheat is grown', and 'wheat hill', v. hwǣten , hwǣte , hyll ).

There is mention of a taberna ('tavern, inn') here in 1288Ass .
