Etymology

'The ford (on R. Stour) where nuts grow', from hnutu and ford , with blæc 'black, dark' and lȳtel 'little', cf. Blandford F. par. supra . The affix -Barnage is manorial, cf. terram Hamelini filii Radulfi Barnage 1197AddCh , Reginald Barnage 1311 Hutch3, Richard Joan Bernage 1332 SR. Some of the early unaffixed forms may strictly belong under France Fm in Stourpaine par. infra .
