Etymology

Gorewood (6″), Gore Wood (ST 660066), bosco de la Gore 1258For , gorewodde 1550PlR , 'wood called Gorewood '1576 Hutch3, Gorewoode 1615DuCo , Gore Wood 1811 OS, 'wood in the triangular piece of ground', from gāra and wudu . The triangular shape of this area of woodland between Prince's Wood in Hermitage par. supra and Grange Woods in this par. infra can still be clearly seen on the maps. Gorewood was until 1933 a small civil par. (v. note under par. heading supra ).
