Etymology

'(Place at) the maple-tree', v. mapuldor , ēast , west , cf. East Town (e ) (in Mapouder )1543, 1546 Hutch3. DB Mapertune (f.75, ExonMapertona ) is also identified with Mappowder by C. & F. Thorn, Domesday Book : Dorset , Phillimore, 1983, cf. the comment s.n. Mapperton 256; the two names may have been confused, or the form with tūn may represent a genuine alternative.
