Etymology

'Fortified farmstead' or 'farmstead near a fortification', v. burh-tūn, cf. East Burton & West Burton 1176, Bourton par. supra ; ēast 'east', ēasterra 'more easterly', magna 'great', and lang 1 'long' (from the length of the village) distinguish it from Little Burton infra .
