Etymology

Cornford Bridge (ST 693121), Cornford Hill (Fm), Querneford Hy 3 (14) Cerne, corneforde bridge , corneforde myll 1569–74Map , Cornhill [Bridge]1791 Boswell, Corn Ford 1839TA , 'ford by the mill', v. cweorn , ford , no doubt with reference to an early mill on the site of the 16th cent. mill documented above, cf. John atte Forde of Holwelle 1378 Cl.Quarnford St (DEPN) and Cornford Gl 135 are identical in origin. The form Querneford occurs in the bounds of Blackmoor Forest supra .
